Professor Lewis Lancaster on the Maritime Buddhism Project

Is everything we understand about the spread of Buddhism incorrect?

The Maritime Buddhism project explores Buddhism's diffusion through naval, rather than landlocked, channels of transmission. These were seaports in South India. Lewis Lancaster, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, is the leading figure behind the project.

We welcomed him to Hong Kong and are excited to learn more about his revolutionary findings of how Mahayana Buddhism spread from India throughout South East Asia to China and beyond.
