Council of Rangoon. A council convened in Rangoon, Burma, to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the death of the Buddha. Sometimes referred to as the ‘sixth council’, it was held over two years from 1954 to 1956 and was attended by 2,400 monks from Theravāda countries. The proceedings of the council were dedicated to editing and reciting the texts of the Pāli Canon.
