Definition[1]

ghaṇṭā (Sanskrit). A ritual bell used in Buddhist tantric practice, often in conjunction with the vajra. The half-vajra which surmounts the bell as a handle normally has the usual five prongs but examples with one, three, or nine prongs are also found, the latter especially associated with the Tibetan Nyingma lineage. In Tibetan Buddhism, the bell has a range of meanings from a simple reminder of impermanence (anitya) to a symbolic representation of the female principle of insight (prajñā). In Japanese Shingon it is associated with the Matrix of Compassion Realm (karuṇā-garbha-dhātu).
