gotra
(Sanskrit). A clan or family; often used in Mahāyāna in the sense of a religious group or spiritual communion, either innate or acquired. According to Yogācāra, there are five such spiritual groups: three corresponding to the three yānas (Śrāvaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva), to which are added an indeterminate group (aniyata) and a group totally lacking any spiritual potentiality (agotra).
