I-shan I-ning (1247-1317)
A Chinese Ch'an monk whom the Yüan dynasty government sent to Japan as a missionary. After an initial misunderstanding in which he was imprisoned by the Japanese court as a spy, he was later recognized as a great teacher and attracted many of the brightest Buddhist clerics as his students.
