Koryŏ Period (918-1392)

A period of political unity in Korea during which Buddhism flourished under state support. This period saw the publication of the Korean Buddhist canon in the early 13th century, and also the intellectual and ecumenical activities of influential figures such as Ŭich'ŏn (1055-1101) Chinul (1158-1210), and T'aego Pou (1301-82). However, prosperity also brought laxity and corruption, and by the end of the period, the Buddhist monastic establishment had fallen into much disrepute, paving the way for the repression of Buddhism in the subsequent Ch'osŏn Period (1392-1909).
