Kṣitigarbha

A mythical Bodhisattva in Mahāyāna Buddhism, especially associated with the underworld. Kṣitigarbha is popular in Japan where he is known as Jizō bosatsu and associated with the care of young children who have died an untimely death. Statues of Kṣitigarbha are common in Japanese cemeteries which depict him as a smiling monk with a staff and jewels in his hands; these statues usually have votive bibs of red cloth tied around his neck.
