Mahāmuni Paya 

Literally ‘Stūpa of the great sage’, this Mandalay stūpa is also known as Rakhine/Arakan Paya. It was originally built by King Bodawpaya in 1784, but the shrine was destroyed by fire in 1884 and the current one is relatively recent. The centrepiece of this shrine is the highly venerated Candasāra Buddha image which was transported here from Arakan. The complex also contains other artefacts also looted from Arakan but originally from Angkor Wat from which they were taken in 1431. The temple courtyard also contains several inscriptions. The Mahāmuni Paya Festival, attracting thousands of people is held here every year in early February.
