sāmānya-lakṣaṇa
(Sanskrit). A general attribute or universal characteristic, for example the property of extension or hardness. The term is found in the Pāli commentaries from the time of Buddhaghoṣa onwards, as well as in the schools of Buddhist logic (pramāṇa) and related systems. In contrast to ‘specific attributes’ (sva-lakṣaṇa), sāmānya-lakṣaṇa are purely nominal constructions generated by the mind and superimposed upon objects, without any reality in themselves.
