八忍  Eight tolerances, which, together with the eight wisdoms 八智, constitute the sixteen minds 十六心. Each one of the tolerances (or causes) precedes an insight with which it is associated. These are experienced in the Path of Seeing 見道. They are: (1) the tolerance of the dharma of suffering 苦法忍; (2) the tolerance of kinds of suffering 苦類忍; (3) the tolerance of the dharma of arising 集法忍; (4) the tolerance of kinds of arising 集類忍; (5) the tolerance of the dharma of cessation 滅法忍; (6) the tolerance of kinds of cessation 滅類忍; (7) the tolerance of the Way 道法忍; (8) the tolerance of kinds of the way 道類忍.

The eight kṣānti, or powers of patient endurance, in the desire-realm and the two realms above it, necessary to acquire the full realization of the truth of the Four Axioms, 四諦; these four give rise to the 四法忍, i.e. , , , 道法忍, the endurance or patient pursuit that results in their realization. In the realm of form and the formless, they are called the 四類忍. By patient meditation the 見惑 false or perplexed views will cease, and the八智 eight kinds of jñāna or gnosis be acquired; therefore results from and the sixteen, 八忍八智 (or ), are called the 十六心, i.e. the sixteen mental conditions during the stage of 見道, when illusions or perplexities of view are destroyed. Such is the teaching of the 唯識宗. The 八智 are , , ,道法智 and , etc. 類智.

四法忍與四類忍,合稱為八忍。四法忍是苦法忍、集法忍、滅法忍、道法忍,這四法忍,忍可印證欲界的四諦。四類忍是苦類忍、集類忍、滅類忍、道類忍,這四類忍,忍可印證色界無色界的四諦。以上八忍可以正確地斷除三界內的見惑。

八忍===﹝出四教儀集註﹞

〔一、苦法忍〕,苦,即欲界生死之苦。法,即真如之理。忍,即忍可,亦印證之義也。謂於四善根位中,因觀欲界生死之苦,至世第一後心,真如理顯,生無漏法忍,是名苦法忍。(四善根者,即四加行,暖位、頂位、忍位、世第一位也。無漏者,謂不漏落三界生死也。) 〔二、苦類忍〕,苦,即色界、無色界、生死之苦。類,即流類。謂觀欲界苦諦之後,復觀上二界苦諦,亦生無漏法忍,是欲界苦法忍之流類,是名苦類忍。(上二界者,即色界、無色界也。) 〔三、集法忍〕,集,即招集之義。謂觀欲界集諦,見、思之惑,真如理顯,生無漏法忍,是名集法忍。(見惑者,謂意根對法塵起諸分別;眼等五根,對色等五塵,起諸貪愛思惑者,謂曰思惑也。) 〔四、集類忍〕,謂觀欲界集諦之後,復觀上二界集諦,生無漏法忍,是欲界集法忍之流類,是名集類忍。 〔五、滅法忍〕,滅,即滅無之義。謂觀欲界滅諦,滅前苦集,真如理顯,生無漏法忍,是名滅法忍。 〔六、滅類忍〕,謂觀欲界滅諦之後,復觀上二界滅諦,生無漏法忍,是欲界滅法忍之流類,是名滅類忍。 〔七、道法忍〕,道,即三十七道品。謂觀欲界道諦,修此道品,真如理顯,生無漏法忍,是名道法忍。(三十七道品者,觀身不淨、觀受是苦、觀心無常、觀法無我,是四念處。已生惡,令永斷;未生惡,令不生;已生善,令增長;未生善,令得生,是四正勤。欲如意足、念如意足、精進如意足、思惟如意足,是四如意足。信根、精進根、念根、定根、慧根,是五根。信力、精進力、念力、定力、慧力,是為五力。念覺分、擇法覺分、精進覺分、喜覺分、除覺分、定覺分、捨覺分,是七覺分。正見、正思惟、正語、正業、正命、正精進、正念、正定,是八正道。已上諸法總為三十七道品也。) 〔八、道類忍〕,謂觀欲界道諦之後,復觀上二界道諦,生無漏法忍,是欲界道法忍之流類,是名道類忍。

(名數)於欲界與上二界四諦之理忍可印證之智也,忍可印證欲界之四諦謂之四法忍:一苦法忍,二集法忍,三滅法忍,四道法忍也。忍可印證色界無色界之四諦,謂之四類忍,一苦類忍,二集類忍,三滅類忍,四道類忍也。以此八忍正斷三界之見惑也。既斷見惑已,而觀照明了,則為八智,蓋八忍是無間道,八智是解脫道,忍為智之因,智為忍之果也。合此八忍八智,稱為見道之十六心。止觀輔行六曰:「忍者因也。」
