謂修五戒十善,兼行布施福業,優劣不等,故感報所生之處,亦高下不同,稱八福生處。(一)人中富貴,謂天地所生,惟人為貴。既得為人,而又富貴,則其所修福業必勝餘人,故於今生得此福報。(二)四天王天,即東方持國天王、南方增長天王、西方廣目天王、北方多聞天王。此四天王居須彌山腹,由修施戒二種最勝福業,是以感報得生其中。(三)忉利天,又作三十三天。昔有三十三人,同修勝業,同生此天,居須彌山頂,四角各有八宮,中有帝釋殿,帝釋即天主。此天由修施戒二種福業勝於四天王,是以感報得生其中。(四)夜摩天,謂時時唱言快樂之故。此天由修施戒二種福業勝於忉利天,是以感報得生其中。(五)兜率天,謂於上妙五欲能夠知足。此天由修施戒二種福業勝於夜摩天,是以感報得生其中。(六)化樂天,謂欲得五欲之樂時,皆自變化以相娛樂。此天由修施戒二種福業勝於兜率天,是以感報得生其中。(七)他化天,謂欲得樂境之時,他天為其變化,假他所成,以為己樂。此天即欲界天主。由修施戒二種福業勝於化樂天,是以感報得生其中。(八)梵天,謂離欲界垢染,上升色界,故稱為梵。梵,即淨之意。若大梵天,即娑婆世界主,由修施戒二種福業勝於他化天,兼修禪定,是以感報得生其中。〔瑜伽師地論卷三〕

The eight happy conditions in which he may be reborn who keeps the five commands and the ten good ways and bestows alms: (1) rich and honourable among men; (2) in the heavens of the four deva kings; (3) the Indra heavens; (4) Suyāma heavens; (5) Tuṣita heaven; (6) 化樂nirmāṇarati heaven, i.e. the fifth devaloka; (7) 他化 Paranirmita-vaśavartin, i.e. the sixth devaloka heaven; (8) the brahma-heavens. 八福田 The eight fields for cultivating blessedness: Buddhas; arhats (or saints); preaching monks (upādhyāya); teachers (ācārya); friars; father; mother; the sick. Buddhas, arhats, and friars (or monks in general) are termed 敬田 reverence-fields; the sick are 悲田 compassion-fields; the rest are 恩田grace- or gratitude- fields. Another group is: to make roads and wells; canals and bridges; repair dangerous roads; be dutiful to parents; support monks; tend the sick; save from disaster or distress; provide for a quinquennial assembly. Another: serving the Three Precious Ones, i.e. the Buddha; the Law; the Order; parents; the monks as teachers; the poor; the sick; animals.

八福生處===﹝出瑜伽師地論﹞ 謂修五戒十善,兼行布施,福業優劣不等,故感報所生之處,則亦高下不同,故名八福生處。(五戒者,不殺、不盜、不邪婬、不妄語、不飲酒也。十善者,不殺、不盜、不邪婬、不妄言、不綺語、不兩舌、不惡口、不貪、不瞋、不邪見也。) 〔一、人中富貴〕,人中富貴者,謂天地所生,惟人為貴。既得為人,而又富貴,則其所修福業,必勝餘人,故於今生得此報也。 〔二、四天王天〕,四天王天者,東方持國天王,南方增長天王,西方廣目天王,北方多聞天王。此四天王,居須彌山腹。由修施、戒二種最勝福業,是以感報得生其中也。(梵語須彌,華言妙高。) 〔三、忉利天〕,梵語忉利,華言三十三。昔有三十三人,同修勝業,同生此天,居須彌山頂。四角各有八宮,中有帝釋殿。帝釋即天主。此天由修施、戒二種福業,勝四天王天。是以感報得生其中也。(三十三人,其一即帝釋也。餘三十二人之名,經論不載。帝釋,梵語釋提桓因,華言能天主。言帝釋者,華梵雙舉也。) 〔四、夜摩天〕,梵語夜摩,華言善時。謂時時唱快樂故也。此天由修施、戒二種福業,勝忉利天,是以感報得生其中也。 〔五、兜率天〕,梵語兜率,華言知足。謂於上妙五欲知止足故也。此天由修施、戒二種福業,勝夜摩天,是以感報得生其中也。(五欲者,色欲、聲欲、香欲、味欲、觸欲也。謂之上妙者,以勝欲界麤弊五欲故也。) 〔六、化樂天〕,化樂天者,謂欲得五欲樂時,皆自變化,以相娛樂故也。此天由修施、戒二種福業,勝兜率天,是以感報得生其中也。 〔七、他化天〕,他化天者,謂欲得樂境之時,他天為其變化,假他所成,以為己樂故也。此天,即欲界天主。由修施、戒二種福業,勝化樂天,是以感報得生其中也。 〔八、梵天〕,梵,淨也。謂離欲界垢染,上升色界,故名為淨。若大梵天,即娑婆世界主。由修施、戒二種福業,勝他化天;又兼修禪定,是以感報得生其中也。(梵語娑婆,華言能忍。)
