華譯歸命、敬禮、歸依、救我、度我等義，是眾生向佛至心皈依信順的話。namaḥ;

Pali: namo; to submit oneself to, from to bend, bow to, make obeisance, pay homage to; an expression of submission to command, complete commitment, reverence, devotion, trust for salvation, etc. Also written 南牟; 南謨; 南忙; 那謨 (or 那模 or 那麻); 納莫 (or 納慕); 娜母; 曩莫 (or 曩謨); 捺麻(or捺謨), etc. It is used constantly in liturgy, incantations, etc., especially as in namaḥ Amitābha, which is the formula of faith of the Pure-land sect, representing the believing heart of all beings and Amitābha's power and will to save; repeated in the hour of death it opens the entrance to the Pure Land.

 梵語 namas，巴利語 namo。又作南牟、那謨、南謨、那摩、曩莫、納莫等。意譯作敬禮、歸敬、歸依、歸命、信從。原為「禮拜」之意，但多使用於禮敬之對象，表歸依信順，含救我、度我、屈膝之意。如稱南無三寶（梵 namo ratna-trayāya，音譯作南無喝囉怛那哆囉夜耶、那謨囉怛那怛囉夜耶），即表歸依佛法僧三寶之意。如稱南無阿彌陀佛、南無妙法蓮華經等，將「南無」兩字冠於佛名或經名前，亦表歸依之意。〔增一阿含經卷四十七、法華經卷一方便品、玄應音義卷六〕（參閱「名號」2260、「題目」6650）
