The four phala, i. e. fruitions, or rewards — srota-āpanna-phala, sakrdāgāmi-phala, anāgāmiphala, arhat-phala, i. e. four grades of saintship; see 須陀洹; 斯陀含, 阿那含, and 阿離漢. The four titles are also applied to four grades of śramanas— yellow and blue flower śramanas, lotus śramanas, meek śramanas, and ultra-meek śramanas.

1.指聲聞乘的四種果位,即須陀洹果、斯陀含果、阿那含果、阿羅漢果。初果須陀洹,華譯為入流,意即初入聖人之流;二果斯陀含,華譯為一來,意即修到此果位者,死後生到天上去做一世天人,再生到我們此世界一次,便不再來欲界受生死了;三果阿那含,華譯為無還,意即修到此果位者,不再生於欲界;四果阿羅漢,華譯為無生,意即修到此果位者,解脫生死,不受後有,為聲聞乘的最高果位。

(名數)聲聞乘聖果之差別也,舊譯家以梵名,謂為須陀洹果Srotapanna phala,巴Sotapanna phala,斯陀含果Sakrdagami,阿那含果Angami-,阿羅漢果Arahat-,新譯家以前三果翻名為預流果,一來果。不還果,阿羅漢果仍其舊。一須陀洹果,舊作入流,逆流。入流預流,同一之義。謂去凡夫初入聖道之法流也,逆流者,謂入聖位逆生死之暴流也。申言之,即三界見惑斷盡之位也。二斯陀含果,譯云一來。斷欲界九地思惑(新曰修惑)中前六品,尚餘後三品者也。為其後三品之思惑,尚當於欲界之人間與天界(六欲天),受生一度,故曰一來,一來者一度往來之義也。三阿那含果,舊譯不來,新云不還,斷盡欲惑後三品之殘餘,不再還來欲界之位也。爾後受生則必為色界無色界。四阿羅漢果,譯作殺賊,應供,不生。上至非想處一切思惑斷盡之聲聞乘極果也。以其斷盡一切見思二惑,故謂之殺賊,既得極果應受人天之供養,故曰應供,一世之果報盡,故永入涅槃,不再來生三界,故謂之不生。【又】一黃藍花沙門,須陀洹之聖者也。二芬陀利花沙門,斯阿含果之聖者也。三柔軟沙門,阿那含之聖者也。四柔軟中柔軟沙門,阿羅漢果也。見增一阿含二十。

Four Fruition  四果  also known as Four Phala. These are four grades of arhatship, namely   1.Śrota-āpanna: has entered the stream of holy living; the first stage of the arhat, that of a Śrāvaka   2.Sakṛdāgāmin: comes to be born once more; the second grade of arhatship involving only one birth   3.Anāgāmin: will not be reborn in this world (i.e. Six Paths), but in the Form Realm or Formless Realm, where he will attain to Nirvāṇa   4.Arhan: enters Nirvāṇa. All Karma of reincarnation is destroyed. He also reaches a state of no longer learning. He is the highest Saint in Hīnayāna in contrast with the Bodhisattva as the Saint in Mahāyāna
