師子 [py] shīzǐ [wg] shih-tzu [ko] 사자 saja [ja] シシ shishi ||| A synonym of 獅子, meaning "lion." In Buddhism, this term is an epithet of the Buddha, as it refers to his being the greatest among human beings, as the lion is the king of beasts (siṃha). This term is used ubiquitously in such texts as the Śrīmālā-sūtra and and the Nirvana Sutra.

(一)梵語 sijha,巴利語 sīha。又作獅子。獅子為百獸之王,故諸經論中每以獅子比喻佛之無畏與偉大。又如佛之座席稱為師子座、獅子座,佛之說法稱師子吼、獅子吼。
(二)(?~259)梵名 Sijha,巴利名同。又稱師子比丘、師子菩提。禪宗相承系譜西天二十八祖中之第二十四祖。中印度人,婆羅門出身,從鶴勒那得法後,遊方至罽賓國,教化波利迦、達磨達等人,並傳法予婆舍斯多,命其往南天竺教化,遂獨留罽賓,時遇當地迫害佛教,被惡王所殺,寂年為魏高貴鄉公甘露四年。〔付法藏因緣傳卷六、景德傳燈錄卷二、寶林傳卷五〕
