李通玄 [py] Li Dongxuan [wg] Li T'ung-hsüan [ko] 리통현 Yi t'onghyŏn [ja] リツウゲン Ri Tsūgen ||| Li Tongxuan (635-730) An important lay scholar of Huayan 華嚴 Buddhism, a contemporary of Fazang 法藏. Initially not well-recognized, but later appreciated by masters of the Yangqi line of Linji 臨濟 Ch'an. His writings, most important of which was his forty-fascicle commentary on Śikṣānanda's translation of the Huayan jing (the Xin huayan jing lun 新華嚴經論) made a profound influence on later Korean Hwaŏm and Sŏn, where it received a lengthy commentary by Chinul 知訥. It also had an impact on Japanese Kegon.

（635～730）唐代華嚴學者。王族出身，或謂滄州（河北滄縣）人。天賦異稟，學無常師，洞精儒釋二典，入林泉，遠離城市之囂。開元七年（719），隱於太原府壽陽方山之土龕，參究新譯華嚴經。居山中數載，每日僅以棗顆、柏葉餅為食，世稱棗柏大士。開元十八年三月，於龕室坐化，享年九十六。宋徽宗賜號「顯教妙嚴長者」。所著有新華嚴經論四十卷、華嚴經會釋論十四卷、略釋新華嚴經修行次第決疑論四卷、略釋、釋解迷顯智成悲十明論各一卷、十玄六相、百門義海、普賢行門、華嚴觀及諸詩賦等。〔華嚴經決疑論序及後記、華嚴經合論卷首李長者事迹、華嚴論節要卷末行狀、宋高僧傳卷二十二、佛祖統紀卷四十、佛祖歷代通載卷十三、唐李長者通玄行蹟記、昭化寺帖、昭化寺李長者龕記（上三者為金石續編卷十七所收）〕
