為梵語 śākya 之意譯。音譯為釋迦。釋迦,乃印度種族之名;因釋尊係出身於釋迦族之賢人,故被尊為釋迦牟尼(梵 Śākya-muni)。muni,寂默、賢人之義。一般亦以 śākya 之譯語「能仁」,稱呼釋尊。修行本起經(大三‧四六二中):「汝卻後當得作佛,名釋迦文(漢言能仁)。」
