A transliteration of the Sanskrit avaivartika, which means "non-backsliding." The mind firm in its intent on the attainment of enlightenment that does not fall back again into mistaken habits. This is one of the marks of the attainment of bodhisattvahood, as distinguished from worldlings and practitioners of the two vehicles. Also written as 阿毘跋致 and 阿惟越致.
