tri-sahasra-mahā-sahasra-loka-dhātu, a great chiliocosm; 三千; 三千界, 三千世界. Mt. Sumeru and its seven surrounding continents, eight seas and ring of iron mountains form one small world; 1, 000 of these form a small chiliocosm 小千世界; 1, 000 of these small chiliocosms form a medium chiliocosm 中千世界; a thousand of these form a great chiliocosm 大千世界, which thus consists of 1, 000, 000, 000 small worlds. The 三千 indicates the above three kinds of thousands, therefore 三千大千世界 is the same as 大千世界, which is one Buddha-world.

梵語 tri-sāhasra-mahā-sāhasra-loka-dhātu，巴利語 ti-sahassī-mahā-sahassīloka-dhātavo。係為古代印度人之宇宙觀。又作一大三千大千世界、一大三千世界、三千世界。謂以須彌山為中心，周圍環繞四大洲及九山八海，稱為一小世界，乃自色界之初禪天至大地底下之風輪，其間包括日、月、須彌山、四天王、三十三天、夜摩天、兜率天、樂變化天、他化自在天、梵世天等。此一小世界以一千為集，而形成一個小千世界，一千個小千世界集成中千世界，一千個中千世界集成大千世界，此大千世界因由小、中、大三種千世界所集成，故稱三千大千世界。然據正確推定，所謂三千世界實則為十億個小世界，而三千大千世界實為千百億個世界，與一般泛稱無限世界、宇宙全體之模糊概念實有差距。又於佛典之宇宙觀中，三千世界乃一佛所教化之領域，故又稱一佛國。〔觀無量壽經卷十二、俱舍論卷十一、有部毘奈耶雜事卷二、往生要集卷八十四〕

三千大千世界 [py] sānqiān dàqiān shìjiè [wg] san-chien ta-chien shih-chieh [ko] 삼천대천세계 samch'ŏn taech'on segye [ja] サンゼンダイセンセカイ sanzen daisen sekai ||| (trisāhasra-mahāsāhasra-loka-dhātu). One billion worlds, constituting the domain of the Buddha. A world consists of the world of desire and the first heaven of the world of form. One thousand times one thousand times one thousand makes one billion. Commonly abbreviated as sanqianshijie 三千世界. It is a way of describing the vastness and interwovenness of the universe in ancient Indian cosmology.

二解　集論四卷二頁云：乃至一日一月周遍流光所照方處，名一世界。如是千世界中，有千日，千月，千蘇迷盧山王，千四大洲，千四大王眾天，千三十三天，千夜摩天，千睹史多天，千樂變化天，千他化自在天，千梵世天，如是總名小千世界。千小千界，總名第二中千世界。千中千界，總名第三大千世界。如此三千大千世界，總有大輪圍山周匝圍繞。又此三千大千世界，同壞同成。譬如天雨，滴如車軸，無間無斷，從空下注；如是東方無間無斷無量世界，或有將壞，或有將成，或有正壞，或壞已住，或有正成，或成已住，如於東方，乃至一切十方亦爾。
