Nine classes, or grades, i.e. 上上, 上中, 上下 upper superior, middle superior, lower superior, and so on with and . They are applied in many ways, e.g. 上品上生 the highest type of incarnate being, to 下品下生, the lowest, with corresponding karma; see 九品淨土. Each grade may also be subdivided into nine, thus making a list of eighty-one grades, with similar further subdivision ad infinitum.

九品 Nine classes, nine levels. Buddhist scriptural texts commonly define such things as afflictions, heavenly rebirths, faculties of sentient beings and so forth into nine categories 九品, which are the three categories of superior, middling, and inferior 上中下, further divided into the same three, resulting in nine. (1) Nine levels in the Abhidharmakośa and in Pure Land doctrine: the great of the great, middling of the great, small of the great; great of the middling, middling of the middling and small of the middling; great of the small, middling of the small and small of the small. (2) Nine classes of affliction. See 九品惑.

(名數)九種品類之意。即上上,上中,上下,中上,中中,中下,下上,下中,下下也。感,智,機,行等,皆分此等九種之品類,謂為九品惑等。而於淨土教亦然。觀無量壽經所說上品上生乃至下品下生,為九品,又名九輩。其往生稱為九品之往生,其來迎稱為九品之來迎,其佛稱為九品之彌陀,其往生之土稱為九品之淨土等。淨影謂四地至六地之菩薩,為上品上生之人。初二三地信忍之菩薩,為上品中生之人。種性以上之菩薩,為上品下生之人。又小乘前三果之聖者,為中品上生。見道已前之內外二凡,為中品中生。見道已前之世俗凡夫,為中品下生。又下品三生皆為大乘始學之人。未可辨其階降。故唯隨於過之輕重,以分三品。天台以習種至解行之菩薩,為上品之人,外凡十信已下,為中品之人,今時悠悠之凡夫,為下品之人。嘉祥亦如淨影,謂上上品之無生,為七地,上六品之機,為大小乘之聖人。善導則反之。謂九品悉為凡夫。上品三人,為遇大之凡夫,中品三人,為遇小之凡夫,下品三人,為遇惡之凡夫。以凡夫亦可遂上六品之往生也。其行法及得果,據觀經言之,則上品上生者,發三心,又慈心不殺,修諸戒行,誦讀大乘方等經典,修行六念,往生即時悟無生法忍。上品中生者,雖不必受持誦讀方等經典,而必善解義趣,於第一義心不驚動,深信因果,不謗大乘,往生已後,經一小劫,得無生忍。上品下生者,亦信因果,不謗大乘,但發無上道心,經一小劫,住於歡喜地。中品上生者,持五戒八戒等,不造眾惡,即時得阿羅漢道。中品中生者,持一日一夜八戒齋,又持沙彌戒具足戒,威儀無缺,往生即得須陀洹,經半劫成阿羅漢。中品下生者,孝養父母,行世之仁慈,命終時,聞阿彌陀佛之本願及國土之樂事,經一小劫成阿羅漢。下品上生者,雖不誹謗方等經典,而多造眾惡,無有慚愧,命終時,聞大乘十二部經之首題名字,又稱南無阿彌陀佛,除多劫之罪,經十小劫入於初地。下品中生者,毀犯五戒八戒具足戒,偷僧祇物,不淨說法無有慚愧,命終時,聞阿彌陀佛之十力威德,罪滅往生,經六劫而華開,發無上道心。下品下生者,造五逆十惡,具諸不善,命終時,至心具足十念,稱南無阿彌陀佛,經十二大劫而華開,發菩提心。是也。蓋此等九品之行法,與觀經所說之三福,為開合之異,雖一往配之於各品,而實則各品之行,亦皆通於各品,成九九八十一品,又更成無量無數品也。又此九品與無量壽經所說之三輩,有開合之異說。曇鸞,淨影等,謂三輩九品,全為開合之不同,彼之上輩,即此之上品三生,中輩即中品,下輩即下品云。諸經說九品者甚多。
