總持 [py] zŏngchí [wg] tsung-ch'i [ko] 총지 ch'ongji [ja] ソウジ sōji ||| To hold to the good, trying not to give rise to evil. To completely retain the Buddhist teachings (dhāraṇī). 'Total retention.' 

 

總一切法和持一切義的意思，是梵語陀羅尼的譯義。

南北朝時代尼師。又稱尼總持。俗姓蕭，名明練，為梁武帝之女；出家後，號總持。師事禪宗初祖菩提達磨。據景德傳燈錄卷三載，達磨棲止少林寺九年之後，欲歸印度，便喚來門下弟子道副、尼總持、道育、慧可等，令各言所得，其時師以（大五一‧二一九下）「我今所解，如慶喜見阿閦佛國，一見更不再見」之語，而被達磨印可為「汝得吾肉」。其餘事蹟、生卒年均不詳，僅知其塔距離少林寺約五里，塔碑為褚詢望所寫。〔曆代法寶記菩提達摩章、寶林傳卷八、祖堂集卷二、祖庭事苑卷八〕
